UN Status
We are thrilled to share that on June 7, 2023, the Policy Studies Organization (PSO), publisher of the Journal on AI Policy and Complex Systems (JAIPCS), received special consultative status from the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations (UN). This acknowledgment brings both honor and a significant responsibility. ECOSOC's consultative relationships with nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) allow it to tap into expert insights from organizations with specialized competence in various subject matters. With a portfolio of 35 international journals covering a wide spectrum of policy-related issues, the PSO, a nonprofit NGO headquartered in Washington, D.C., unequivocally meets the criteria for this special recognition.
This consultative status grants the PSO and its journals diverse avenues for engagement with ECOSOC, its subsidiary bodies, the UN Human Rights Council, and, under specific circumstances, attendance at select meetings of the UN General Assembly and other intergovernmental bodies, along with the UN Secretariat. Moreover, it empowers the PSO to appoint official representatives to the UN headquarters in New York, Geneva, and Vienna, who can actively participate in UN sessions, events, conferences, and activities.
As one of the 35 PSO journals closely aligned with issues and actions discussed within the UN, JAIPCS celebrates this new status. It significantly expands the practical reach of the journal's policy discussions, offering authors a broader platform for their work. Synopses and citations of articles published in JAIPCS can now be shared with UN committees, alongside their customary publication in the journal. JAIPCS will also feature reports on ongoing ECOSOC activities, and authors of pivotal articles may contribute written opinions to ongoing UN committee discussions. Discussions are ongoing to potentially nominate JAIPCS authors to represent the PSO at future UN activities.
